The camp (founded in 1972) is a 7-day overnight camp for teens ages 11-21 who have a sincere interest in the art of magic. More than 100 students from around the globe, spend each day with magic classes for both stage and close-up, daily lectures by guests, specialty workshops, competitions, breakout sessions and a different professional show each night. To escape the pressures of growing up, these magic-obsessed kids congregate at the one place they can be themselves. They want to prove their worth on the same stage where superstar magicians like Blaine and Copperfield once performed. But to get there, they need to learn more than sleight of hand and tricks of the trade. They have to find the magic inside. Along the way, there are family hardships, rough performance critiques, a few heartbreaking moments and quite a few laughs. Some graduates of the camp include TV's street-magician, David Blaine, Academy Award-Winning actor, Adrien Brody, Siegfried & Roy protege, Darren Romeo, the "Millionaire's Magician," Steve Cohen, David Kaye (aka "Silly Billy"), and others.
This award-winning film, directed and produced by Judd Ehrlich, is a coming-of-age story, that not only documents the overall camp experience, but also follows a select few young magicians as they use the camp as a safe place to push through some very difficult life challenges. One of the students is learning to deal with Tourette's Syndrome, and another copes with an near-fatal accident involving his father that happened at home, while he was away at camp, and others have equally life-altering experiences that affect their journey through life, and Magic Camp.
Along with the campers, many of the professional adult staff are featured, including camp directors, Terri Cook and Dennis Cook, counselors Hiawatha Johnson Jr., David Oliver, Derek Hughes, Derrin Berger, Meeka Johnson, Frank Monaco, Adam Rubin, and Harrison Greenbaum.
