Close-up magic is a recent type of magic performance, not officially named until the 1920s. Prior to then it was sometimes called "Close-Quarters Magic." citation?
Close-up magic was simply not generally done early on. The earliest examples would be street magic during the middle ages, then later parlor or salon magic. citation?
