Hal Merton (1876-1948) was the stage name of Walter George Peterkin who performed on the lyceum circuit as a magician and ventriloquist.

He was owner and publisher of Mahatma from February 1900 - 1901.[1][2][3]
He left money to Amityville, New York to build and maintain a park called 'Peterkin Park' in memory of his parents.[4]
