Joseph Bland, who may have originally worked as a dance instructor, was a magician and one of the most famous and respected magic dealers in Victorian London.

He started as a dealer around 1855 and had a number of shops from which he sold magical apparatus. In 1863 he moved into the shop on Oxford Street in London.

He allowed many of this apparatuses to be described by Professor Hoffmann's books Modern Magic and More Magic.[1][2][3]
