Karachi was the Indian stage persona of a British magician named Arthur Claude Derby from Plymouth.
As part of the Magic Circle challenge in 1935, Karachi offered to do the rope part of the fabled Indian Rope Trick in the open air, provided he could prepare the grounds 48 hours in advance and keep the audience at least 15 yards away. Karachi declined to make the boy vanish (that being the impossible part), thus was not awarded the prize.[1][2]
