Washington Wizards was a magic club in Washington D.C., with more than 700 members, formed by Al Cohen, owner of Al's Magic Shop in July 1976. Members were issued membership cards, and a certificate suitable for framing, both signed by Al.
It was also the name of their type-written, printed monthly Newsletter, first published also in July 1976.[1]
The fun, witty and informative "Washington Wizards Newsletter" provided information about who was performing and lecturing in the area, as well as descriptions of new tricks and effects, upcoming conventions & events, some of the latest magician jokes, and reviews of new books on Magic. The newsletter (though less than periodic at times -- and sometimes fairly sporadic if the shop was too busy) ran at least until 1994, when the old manual typewriter it was written on is rumored to have maybe finally given out.[2]
