Chautauqua began as a touring lecture circuit, held under a canvas tent show which originated in New York, but became an institution which traveled across the United States. Chautauqua came to include entertainment acts as well as lectures, and produced many legendary performers.

Many magicians performed on the Lyceum and Chautauqua circuit including: Al Baker, McDonald Birch, Charles Carter, Frank Ducrot, Paul Fleming, Jansen (Dante), Joseffy, Eugene Laurant, Silent Mora and Nicola.
