Glorpy is an animated handkerchief effect. After a handkerchief is laid down on a table and commanded by the magician, a ghost shows its presence by coming to life under the handkerchief, lifting it and making it dance around. This effect is also used in demonstrations of spirit writing when shown in a seance or mentalism context.

History

It was created and marketed by Madblood Creations (Bill Madden and Bernie Trueblood) in 1963 as "Glorpy, the Gerkulating Ghost".

Madden and Trueblood's version was an improvement on George Blake's "Haunted Hanky", marketed the year before in 1962. Blake's version was built upon Dik Van Brummer's "The Solid Ghost" (aka "It") published in The Gen (November 1957, Vol. 13 No. 7, p. 205).

A full history by Max Maven was published as "A Brief History of 'It'" in MAGIC (Vol. 9 No. 9, May 2000, p. 78).
