Coney Island is a peninsula, formerly an island, in southernmost Brooklyn, New York City with a beach on the Atlantic Ocean.
The area was a major resort and site of amusement parks that reached its peak in the early 20th century. It declined in popularity after World War II and endured years of neglect.[1]
Magicians that have performed at the resort have included:
- Harry Houdini with his brother Dash as "The Brothers Houdini" and met this wife Bess there.
- Al Baker had a photo studio
- Jean Hugard owned and performed in a magic theater in Luna Park (at Coney Island) from 1919-1929.
- Cary Grant (before he was famous) once worked as a stilt walker on the boardwalk advertising Steeplechase Park.
- Al Flosso, known as The Coney Island Fakir, worked in sideshows
- Larry Grey as a magic pitchmen while Dai Vernon cut silhouettes in the same booth. Dai met his wife, Jeanne Hayes at Coney Island.
- Henry Roltair constructed illusions for Coney Island amusements, including the Upside Down House and Arabian Nights Up-to-Date.
