He began his career as a song and dance man. In 1922, relocating to St. Louis, Missouri, he teamed up with another performer to work the [[vaudeville]] circuit. He encountered magician [[Charles Lindhorst]] and soon  abandoned the musical field for conjuring.

At the end of the 1920s he moved to Colorado, where he met Melba Keeling. She would become his wife and partner,  for well over 60 years, joining the act doing sand and rag paintings. They toured the midwest, primarily doing school assembly shows.
