J. P. Ornson was a professional magician starting in 1893 and toured the northeast of the United States and the Vaudeville circuit.[1]
Ornson received his first lesson in magic at the age of fifteen from Samuel Aretta. Later, he as a pupil of Prof. F. Temple, a German Magician, and also his assistant for two years, in which he assumed the stage name of J. P. Ornson.
He made his first professional appearance in Buffalo, New York on March 13, 1893 at Robinson's Musee Theatre.
After touring New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois with his Troupe of Oriental Wonder Works, he formed a partnership with his cousin John A. Zimmer, a juggler. As theOrnson Bros., they performed Magic, Black Art, Juggling and Spiritualism. Splitting their partnership after two seasons, Ornson then appeared with the Zanzig Company for one season, and later with The Velea & Macs Minstrels. Then with the MacArthur's Vaudeville Stars, he presented his original act the Tramp Magician.
Later in life, he was assisted by his three sons.[2]
