J. W. Sarles (1914-1974) was a mentor to Karl Fulves, who met him when he was thirteen.

Biography

He was friends with John Scarne from the early 1940s. Linking Ring reports show him living in New Rochelle, New York during this time.

An article from the "Bergen Evening Record" from January 18, 1941 (which was reprinted in The Jinx No. 126) entitled "Gali Wins the Magic Dual; Scarne Says He Was Robbed" stated that a William Sarles was on the committee and was an editor of "March of Time" magazine.

A card trick by "Bill Sarles" called "Know-How" was published in Phoenix No. 76 (January 1945) page 310.

Beginning in the mid-1950's and extending to his death in 1974, Sarles held informal get-togethers to exchange of ideas with some of his magician friends including Don Nielsen, whom he referred to as The Division Street Regulars. Some of the material from these meetings were published in a series of booklets by Karl Fulves called "Secret Session" in the 1980s.

The first is of Fulves' Pallbearers Review (1965) was dedicated to him.

Sarles material was published in many of Fulves publications, including the ones for the public such as and Self-Working Rope Magic and Self-Working Coin Magic.

Sarles edited the Lamplighter with Karl Fulves from 1963-1964

A William Sarles was listed in the April 1935 issue of the Sphinx for signing The Sphinx Pledge against exposing.[1]
