Joseph Rinn, a member of the Society of American Magicians, collaborated with Houdini on psychic matters in the early 1920s.
Rinn grew up in New York as a childhood friend of Harry Houdini when they were both members of the Pastime Athletic Club. He developed a minor lung problem and was advised not to push his father's fruit cart forcing him into the fruit brokerage business. He became wealthy at an early age.
Rinn became an amateur magician with a love of investigating charlatans, quacks, and deceivers. He offered enormous sums of money, up to five thousand dollars, as challenges to anyone who could demonstrate a psychic event he could not duplicate.[1]
Rinn was president of the Brooklyn Philosophical Association [2]
