Lapping is a sleight of hand technique used by close-up workers, seated behind a table, for stealing or ditching small objects in their lap. This term became popular in the 1950s when Tony Slydini was using it quite extensively.
It's been said that Alexander Herrmann was also known for using it.
Publications
Probably first mentioned in Reginald Scot's The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584).
Tony Slydini published his technique in the Stars of Magic series Tony Slydini: The Art of Using the Lap as a Servante (1954).
