Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), the writer and mathematician became fascinated with magic as a child, dressing up and entertaining his family. As an adult he was a frequent visitor to magic shows. In his diary, he describes a visit to the Egyptian Hall to see Maskelyne and Cooke's Automaton Psycho in 1876.

Carroll carried this interest in magic over his books which are filled with references to magic and stage illusions.
