  • 1892 - Werner F. Dornfield, known as "Dorny", was born.

  • 1878 - Joseph Vanek, most known for his illusion of taking the head off an assistant and passing the decapitated head among the audience, gave his farewell performance in Budapest.

  • 1894 - Carl Fleming (1894-1940) was born Caryl Stacy Fleming in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
  • 1919 - The Grim Game, a silent film starring Harry Houdini, is released.
  • 1939 - Nate Leipzig (1873-1939), one of the early pioneers of performing simple straight forward magic, passes away.
  • 1941 - David Devant (1868-1941), an English magician, shadowgraphist and film exhibitor, passes away.
  • 1947 - Allan Ackerman is born.
  • 1974 - Ed Sullivan(1901-1974), an American entertainment writer and television host, passes away at the age of 73.
  • 1977 - Harold Sterling (1899-1977) dies in New Port Richey, Florida.





  • 1813 - Alfred Sylvester, known as the Fakir of Oolu is born.
  • 1831 - Hugh Washington Simmons, known as Dr. Lynn is born.
  • 1880 - Hereward Carrington, investigator of psychic phenomena, is born.
  • 1896 - Stephen de Soboll, known as Dr. Z is born.
  • 1917 - Houdini persuades Kellar to come to New York to star in a benefit sponsored by the Society of American Magicians for American casualties of the war. Kellar is carried off the stage by Houdini and other members to the orchestra playing Auld Lang Syne, The six thousand members of the audience stand and sang along.
  • 1997 - Larry Jennings, known for his close-up card techniques, dies.



  • 1930 - Servais Le Roy was hit by a car walking across the streets in New York City
  • 2005 - Ormond McGill, the "Dean of American Hypnotists", dies.
  • 2003 - David Blaine concluded his "Above the Below" stunt in which he lived for 44 days in hanging clear plastic box.






  • 1892 - L. Vosburgh Lyons, a close friend of Theodore Annemann, was born.
  • 1928 - Gene Maze, a highly skilled and creative magician who specialized in card magic, was born.
  • 1951 - Al Baker, known as an outstanding M.C., author, and inventor, dies.
  • 2008 - Ted Lesley, using the stage name of Friedrich Karl Helzel, passes away.


  • 1884 - Silent Mora was born Louis McCord in Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
  • 1995 - David Lederman, one of the earliest proponents and experts in micromagic, passes away.





  • 2001 - Lance Burton performs an upside-down straitjacket escape in Las Vegas as part of the U.S. Postal Service's unveiling of the new Harry Houdini stamp, which would be officially issued in July 2002 at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Society of American Magicians in New York City.
  • 2006 - Kristen Johnson received the Master Award at the 4th Annual International Escape Convention.

  • 1903 - Conrad Bosschieter, known as Connie Bush, was born.
  • 1923 - Topper Martyn, a popular comedy magicican was born Victor Martyn in England.
  • 1948 - Fifteen students of magic and the occult failed to establish contact with the spirit of the late Harry Houdini at a seance held in the Greenwich Village apartment of Conjurors' Editor Walter B. Gibson.
  • 1981 - Maurice Fogel, a professional magician and mentalist known own as "The Amazing Fogel" dies.
  • 2004 - Sidney Hollis Radner auctionned his collection of Houdini's items in Las Vegas.


  • 1861 - Professor Herwinn, inventor of the Thumb Tip, was born William Humpage in Birmingham.
  • 1901 - Russell Swann, a successfull comedy magician, was born William Russell Swann in Washington D. C., the first of 10 brothers.
  • 1926 - Harry Houdini dies of peritonitis secondary to a ruptured appendix.
  • 1936 - Lou Lancaster, who worked with Mark Wilson, is born.
  • 1958 - National Magic Day. Phil Graham (Mr. Fantastic, The Psychadelic Prestidigitator) of S.A.M. Assembly 22 was appointed chairman for this year's activities by S.A.M. Pres. Hugh Riley.
