Maurice "Phil" Grinstead (c.1897-?), considered the "Dean of Hamilton Magicians", served as President of Hamilton, Ontario IBM Ring 17, which later became Ring 49.
Biography
Grinstead did his first public performance in September 1909. His interest in magic was stimulated by a visit to the original Egyptian Hall. Living in London during the era of vaudeville, he saw many illusionists such as Chung Ling Soo and Horace Goldin.
From 1909 to 1914 Grinstead was performing in London at concerts, banquets, private parties and stage shows. He moved to Canada in 1914, but returned to England with the 114th Infantry Battalion early in 1916. At the close of the war he returned to Canada to live in Hamilton, Ontario.[1] When not performing he was the manager of the drapery department in a department store.[2]
His two sons, Martin (c.1921-2005) and Bernard were also both performing magicians.[3]
