Max Hofzinser (1885-1955) was the stage name of professional illusionist Josef Levin.[1]

Originally working as a spice seller, a part-time primary school teacher, a clerk in the police department, and a photographer's assistant, he came upon a catalog of conjuror's equipment from a German supplier. He changed his name to "Max" from two prominent conjurors of the day (Max Alexander and Max Seeman) and his surname from Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser, who had been mentioned in the catalog.

He began performing professionally in 1908 and was later appointed Konglig Hovillusionist ("Royal Illusionist") to both kings Gustaf V and Gustaf VI Adolfph.[2]
