Tarbell Rope Trick
Effect: The performer exhibits three separate pieces of rope, each about a yard long, and ties them together with knots. He proceeds to rub the knots into nothingness between his fingers and finally shows that the three pieces have become a single, uncut, rope.
Tarbell used a gimmick which he called the "Caesar Gimmick", which later became known as the "Tarbell Gimmick".
