Kara Kum was a magician, most noted for his Spook Shows in the 1950s.
He was notorious for creating posters using overt sexuality with his staff of scantily-clad women assistants. He usually played up the gore which included decapitations and elements of cannibalism. He also would "mystically materialize" celebrities like James Dean and Elvis Presley.
His shows sported titles such as Crawling Thing of Planet 13 and Cannibals of Curitiba. He combined traditional spiritualism effects such as spirit paintings with more ghastly offerings such as decapitations and sword penetrations. One very unique feature of his Crawling Thing show was the materialization of Lady Godiva. [1]
An advertisement from KARA-KUM ATTRACTIONS was placed in the first issue of Genii (September, 1960) urgently wanting an "Experienced Magicians to take over Horror Show Units immediately". He also started selling items in Genii via mail order as "House of Kara-Kum".
In 1961, requests began to be made in Genii of Kara-Kum's whereabouts.
A publicity photo for his "International Mystery Revue" can be seen at the Conjuring Arts' exhibit "The Many Faces of Magic."[2]
