Royal Lee Vilas (1873-1935) was Secretary of the National Council (which he helped form in 1927) of the Society of American Magicians.[1]
Biography
He was member number No. 429 of the SAM and a member of the IBM starting in 1926.[2]
During the early years of his life he worked as a mining engineer for the Hercules Powder Co., a company later absorbed by the DuPont. He worked for the DuPont Co. as a supervisor of the State of Connecticut, later becoming the director. Royal's home, during the years he lived in Connecticut, was located in the rural town of Easton and his Royal Lodge became a mecca for magicians.[3]
The SAM Assembly No. 20 in Bridgeport, Connecticut (which he helped found) was named in his honor and he was elected into the Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame.
