Dick Stoner

Dick Stoner is a magician and magic store operator from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Dick is best know for his magic shop, Stoner's Funstore, as well as his career as a trade shown magician.

Biography

Richard Lee Stoner was born April 4th, 1930 to Albert and Lydia Stoner in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He began his magic career as a stagehand for his father at age 3. In 1946 he formally joined the Fort Wayne Magician's Club. By age 18, he was making a living on magic performances in Fort Wayne, Chicago, and other cities in the midwest. In 1949, Dick and his father bought out Percy Abbott's Indianapolis branch of Abbott's Magic for $800 and opened up Stoner's Magic Shop (now Stoner's Funstore) at 712 S Harrison Street in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Dick was enlisted in the United States Military in 1951, being station at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He quickly gained a reputation as a magician and became a part of the fort's USO show: "Billboard." While in the USO, Dick entered and won a talent show with the prize being appearing on the "Steve Allen Show" in 1953. When Dick returned home, he quickly became an active trade show magician with others such as Eddie Tullock and Jay Marshall. In the 1960's, Dick hosted two TV shows in the Fort Wayne area. He was the local host for the "Mickey Mouse Club" as well as "Laurel and Hardy's Magic Castle." In the late 1970's Dick began to expand his store operations with his wife De, who added a rental costume section. Around the same time, Dick began appearing as Ronald McDonald in the tri-state area. Dick continued performing through the 2010's, and had a son-in-law who picked up magic as well. Today, you can find Dick every Saturday still demonstrating at his shop.
