New York State and Canada Conclave of Magicians
New York State and Canada Conclave of Magicians (NYCAN) began as a gathering of magicians in Syracuse in 1932. An annual event held in cities around New York State, it later included magicians from Canada and included it in their name starting in 1955.
Sponsored by the SAM Syracuse Assembly No. 14, with sponsorship from the Parent Assembly in New York City, the first conclave's commitee included E. R. Hall, Charles H. Larson, Herman L. Weber ("Namreh") and director for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer pictures, Al Altman.[1] John Mulholland was the guest of honor.[2]
The second conclave was held in Rochester and the following was in Albany.
By 1948, Canadian magicians were invited and by the 20th conclave in 1955 they official changed the name to the "New York State and Canada Conclave of Magicians".[3] For the 1956 meeting, it was held for the first time outside of New York in Toronto.[4]
The 2000 NYCAN was held in Buffalo, making it one of the longest running conventions in North America.[5]
