Barney Ives (fl.1908-1913), a card manipulator, was a pupil and then partner of Dr. James William Elliott (1874 - 1920).[1]

Biography

Ives formed a partnership with Dr. Elliott in 1908, touring as "Elliot and Ives".[2] In 1910, they toured vaudeville, never making the "big time". Reports in the Sphinx show them playing such places as Scenic Theatre in Hartford, Rockaway, Slatington, Pennsylvania, and Nemo Theatre in Harlem New York.

In July of 1910, their show was destroyed by fire on a steamer traveling from Poughkeepsie to New York. Elliott lost all paraphernalia including livestock. They regrouped and were back on the road by September of the same year.[3]

By 1913, it was reported that Ives was out of the magic business and running a restaurant in Harlem. [4]

The Sphinx for February 1922 reported that "Barney Ives, whom the "oldtimers" will recall as the "King of Eggs," is polishing up some novel card effects of his own origination, and it is believed he has full intentions of getting back into vaudeville."

According to Dai Vernon, Ives was anxious to take on Dr. Elliott's infamous challenge but could not come up with the $10,000. [5]
