Dietrich became interested in magic when reading one of Jean Hugard's books while attending St. Joseph's College in Indiana. He performed a bit while serving in the Army during the war.

Dietrich was only the second living recipient of the [[St. Louis Magical Heritage Award]], an honor given by IBM Ring One and SAM Assembly Eight in 1996.
