He worked numerous odd jobs and served in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy before becoming a professional performer in the late 1920's, using the stage name Carlyle.

He retired from performing in 1954, settling down to raise his kids, operating a successful camera repairing business in Oakland, California.

His wife and assistant, Wanda, was a past officer of the International Magigals. She passed away in 1982.

Carlyle invented the Three-To-One Ropes routine and contributed many effects to Genii and Hugard's Magic Monthly.

Carlyle was eulogized at his funeral on October 30th, 1966 by his longtime friend Lee Grabel.[1][2][3]
