Charles W. Fricke (1882-1958) was an amateur magician and judge.[1]

Biography

Fricke was a leading authority on criminal law, a gruff, hard-nosed jurist with a secret passion for orchids, magic tricks and chocolate cake.

He had a distinguished career in his native hometown of Milwaukee before relocating to Los Angeles in 1917. He received a J.D., LL.M., and LL.D from New York University in 1902.California Governor C. C. Young would later appointed him to fill a vacancy on the Superior Court bench.

He contributed to several magazines and was known for making It's a Pip liquid with Carl Fleming in 1937.[2][3]

He remained an esteemed member of the legal community and he published textbooks on criminal law that were still used in California law schools after his death in 1958. He died of throat cancer after doctors at St. Vincent's Hospital attempted to remove the tumor. [4]
