David (Devil) Deveen was a professional British magician of his time. Early in his career he was billed at the “Gay Deceiver”, then later the “Distinguished Deceiver” or occasionally the “Debonair Deceiver”. This was almost always followed with some variant of “...and is [two] New York Blondes. Deveen used the draw of his “New York” or sometimes “American” blondes for most of his career. Objectifying female assistants in this way is just one of the factors which dates his act. Of course, the assistants were probably never from America.

By 1939, Deveen was an experienced performer with fifteen years treading the boards. Well-regarded by his peers, Deveen was Vice-President of Leicester Magic Circle and regularly headlined variety shows. In June 1939 he attended the International Brotherhood of Magicians annual convention in Michigan, USA, with a contingent of other British performers and Levante, an Australian illusionist. With the onset of the World War Two, Deveen returned to Great Britain and quickly offered his services to his country, signing up as one of the early members of ENSA. He was featured in the first two entertainments for the British Expeditionary Force overseas. Later he went on to manage an ENSA show which toured North Africa and the Middle East.

He specialised in cigarette manipulation and wrote two books on the subject.
