At the age of 16 he became interested in show business as a magician and made appearances in small towns and Chicago.
He entered the insurance business in 1918 as an agent of the Wisconsin National Life Insurance Company, and a few years later became field manager for the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1925 he opened his own insurance company, Walter Agency, and pursued his hobby as a magician.
Walter was the founder and first president of the Wisconsin Houdini Club in 1915, a member of the Indian Magician club (with headquarters in Calcutta, India), the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Society of American Magicians and the Magicians Guild. 
His oldest son, Jack Curtis Walter, performed as a magician under the name Jack Curtis.
Linking Ring and MUM reports often misspelled his name "Walters".
