John Zweers, a high school history teacher with a Masters from University of Southern California, was a fixture in the magic community.[1]
He also learned stagecraft and was a directing major at the Pasadena Playhouse. In magic, Zweers grew up under the guidance of the William Larsen, Sr. and Floyd G. Thayer, becoming friends were Bill and Milt Larsen.
He served within the local S.A.M. Assembly 22 in Los Angeles. He was the first editor of the Los Angeles Wand, a monthly periodical of Assembly 22. He moved up through the ranks of the national organization to be its National President in 1966. He helped memorialize National Magic Day in the United States and parlayed that into the annual National Magic Week.
He was a founding member and president of the Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame and Magic Museum in 1971 and published the Magic Museum Messenger, a quarterly publication about the progress of the Hall which included historical articles.
Zweers was a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 96, and was a past national president of the Puppeteers of America. He also helped form the first Boy Scouts of America Explorer Post dedicated solely to magic called the Wondrous Order of Wizards.[2][3]
