The Wizard's Club

The Wizard's Club is one of the oldest independent magic clubs in the Midwest. It celebrated its 75th year with a banquet on October 1st 2007.

It was organized in 1932 by Sam Berman, Anthony Albino, Andmar, Joe Berg, Sam Berland, Art Glueckstein, Alex Gordon, Francis Haldane, Jack Hecht, and Anthony Lubasz, with Alex becoming the first president.

The Wizard Club News was it's first official publication and edited by Alex Gorden.

Over the years, members have included Okito, Carl Ballentine, Johnny Platt, Werner Dornfield, Jay Marshall, Bill Malone, Jack Gwynne, Tenkai, Doctor Harlan Tarbell, Frances Marshall, Jim Ryan and Joe Berg.

It has been told that they formed the club because at that time Jewish magicians were not allowed to join the Society of American Magicians. Although, Houdini who was Jewish and president of the SAM from 1917 to 1926. Also, Nate Leipzig was a member of the SAM for many years prior to be electing president in 1938. It may have been only specific assemblies were not as tolerant. There have also been rumors that many IBM rings didn't admit people of the Jewish faith too.[1]
