Gabe Fajuri is an American magician, author, collector, historian and owner and president of the Potter & Potter auction house in Chicago.
Biography
Gabe was born and grew up just outside Detroit. He has been interested in magic from an early age - at six years old he visited Abbott’s Magic Company and picked up a catalog. His father, Sami Fajuri, a lawyer and philatelist, would buy him books on magic and take him to various events and venues.
At age 15 he snuck into the age restricted performance of Ricky Jay in the David Mamet directed “Ricky Jay and his 52 assistants” at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago and became a big fan. He began selling magic collectibles on eBay to aid in paying for college and obtained, as he puts it, “Training for the job I never knew I would have”. He obtained a degree in English from the University of Michigan and began a career in journalism, working for The Michigan Daily, Crain Automotive News, Magic Magazine, and Genii Magazine, among others.
After a move to Chicago in 2001, he visited Magic, Inc. and met and befriended Jay Marshall. After Jay’s death in 2005 Gabe’s friend David Meyer was given the job of helping distribute the magic part of Jay’s huge collection and enlisted Gabe to help. Gabe took a leave of absence from his job and they began the monumental task of sorting through all of Marshall’s magic collection and ephemera. They then held an auction, which was a huge success.
When most of the material donated to the American Museum of Magic in Michigan was returned, another auction was needed. David Meyer wanted no part of that enterprise so Gabe and his father partnered on it and Potter & Potter Auctions was born (Potter being an English translation of the Arabic Fajuri).
Gabe also has a successful publishing company, Squash Publishing and a retail magic store Quicker Than The Eye.[1][2][3][4] [5]
