Henry Bate (c.1863-1944), who had experience in making tricks for toy sops, was discovered by David Devant in 1902 and became his chief mechanic.[1]


Biography

The son of a watchmaker and gunsmith a, Bate had developed a craze for conjuring as a schoolboy and spent many hours in his father’s workshop.

Bate’s conjuring interest would extend to professional performing and for several years he had made his living as a drawing room entertainer.

Besides manufacturing tricks, Bate ran a Photographic Studio in Hove.

The March 1944 issue of The Budget reported that Henry Bate died “a few weeks ago at Hove, Sussex, at the age of 80.[2]
