Pierre Moreau (1849-1890) achieved nearly legendary status among French magicians in the 1900s. He did magic in cafes, restaurants and hotels along the Riviera, sojourning for the winter in Paris.[1]
Biography
Moreau served as an assistant and stable hand to a dentist, Joseph Baugie, who used magic to attract patients using the state name Lespinasse. Later he worked as a waiter at the Cafe de la Chartreuse which the actor turned magician, Dieudonne (1829-1903) opened in Montmartre. Moreau would eventually start performing magic in taverns and coffeehouses. Moreau performed magic mostly of his own creations
Along with magic, he would also give gambling demonstrations.
Edouard-Joseph Raynaly (1842-1918) wrote highly of Moreau's magic and said he lived the life of his wealthy patrons, but would die poverty stricken. [2]
